John Tippets presents "Hearts of Courage" and the 1943 Gillam plane crash in Southeast Alaska

“Hearts of Courage” brings to life the amazing, true account of the 1943 Gillam plane crash in the wilderness of Southeast Alaska.

Pilot Harold Gillam, along with five others, including engineer Joseph Tippets, left Seattle on January 5 and were en route to a scheduled refueling stop near Ketchikan when disaster struck.

The harrowing events that followed required tremendous courage, enormous ingenuity, perseverance and many small miracles. The passengers endured sub-zero temperatures and scarce food for 29 days until a dramatic rescue saved them.

Jeff Pantages discusses the policies of John Maynard Keynes

Jeff Pantages, chief investment officer at Alaska Permanent Capital Management, reviews the life of economist John Maynard Keynes with a special emphasis on his investment philosophy. When Keynes died in 1946, he had a personal portfolio valued at $25 million in today’s dollars.

Leight Newman is the author of “Still Points North.” Sherry Simpson is an associate professor in UAA’s Department of Creative Writing and Literary Arts and the author of “Accidental Explorer.”

Cup'ik Dreams: Chevak Teacher Education Initiative Panel presents at the Alaska Native Studies Conference, April 6, 2013

A partnership between the UAA College of Education (COE) and the Kashunamiut School District and Chevak community supports 12 paraprofessionals who are working toward their bachelor’s degrees in elementary education.

This partnership, known as the Chevak Teacher Education Initiative, embraces the concepts of inclusivity and culturally relevant teaching. Course work reflects both Western and Cup’ik cultures and philosophies.

December 2013, it is expected that about half of the group will have earned their associates degrees. This initiative is providing important insights about the power of collaboration as an indigenous community, school and university come together to create a space that supports cultural and language revitalization.

This panel presented on what it means to be part of this initiative, including perspectives from students and faculty, as well as a school superintendent and a school board member.

Panelists included: Laura Atcharian, Elsie Ayuluk, Cora Charles, Twila Chayalkun, Susie Friday-Tall, Catherine Joe, Jacquelyn Kashatok, Priscilla Matchian, Mary Matchian, Neva Mathias, Pauline Miles, Liana Pingayak, Darlene Ulroan and Lisa Unin. Curious about UAA Seawolf Debate? Meet Wiley Cason, representing UAA at the UAA-Harvard Debate April 25

Junior Wiley Cason is one-half of the UAA Debate team meeting Harvard Debate to argue repeal of the Second Amendment on April 25 at the Bear Tooth Theatrepub.

Like his debate partner, Amy Parrent, Cason began debating in high school and joined UAA’s team as a freshman. Today he coaches debate at East High and formerly at Chugiak High.

In this short interview, he describes how a debater prepares by understanding that many arguments come down to the same philosophical issues, such as protecting our liberty and freedom versus our assuring our security.

He says he debates because it’s flattering to have an audience of listeners, and it teaches him to think in a more disciplined way,

This interview was recorded April 15, two days before the U.S. Senate stopped the bipartisan gun legislation that Cason speaks optimistically about in this interview. Cason’s brother, Drew, was on the team that debated Stanford last year over whether hate crimes warrant special punishment. Kathleen McCoy of UAA Advancement interviews.

Curious about UAA's Seawolf Debate? Meet Amy Parrent, representing UAA at the UAA-Harvard Debate April 25

The UAA-Harvard Debate scheduled for April 25 at 8 p.m. at the Bear Tooth Theatrepub, pits two top-flight university debate teams over this motion: “This House Would Repeal the Second Amendment.” UAA will propose, or argue for the repeal of the Second Amendment; Harvard will defend the status quo.

This short interview with Amy Parrent is a window into a student’s perspective of being on the Seawolf Debate team. From Sitka, Amy debated four years in high school, and joined the UAA team as a freshman.

“Steve” in the interview is Steve Johnson, director of the UAA Seawolf Debate Program and debate coach. The interview is by Kathleen McCoy, UAA Advancement

She describes the skill set she has developed through debate, offers a window into preparation, and acknowledges that even after eight years as a debater, she still masters a case of butterflies before each event.
