The Alaska Native Oratory Society celebrated its 10th anniversary with a an opportunity for orators to share spoken word, rap, poetry, humor, storytelling and commemorative narration. The theme for 2012 was “Bravely Facing The Issues: Celebrating Oratory in the 21st Century.”

This segment presents Laura Orenga de Gaffory of Kotzebue giving a commemmorative narration. Her talk is, “In the Words of my Grandmother: Public Statement by Laura Bergt in October 1969 prior to the passage of ANCSA.”

Photographer Michael Conti plans to focus thinking about the winter and summer solstice by creating a camera obscura within the gallery. He’s found a way to represent or mingle the images and sounds of a winter solstice with those of a summer solstice. He’s interviewed here by Kathleen McCoy, recorded June 18, 2012. Brian Schmidt won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2011. He is a graduate of Anchorage’s Bartlett High School, where he says he got a very good education. He earned his doctorate at Harvard by measuring how fast the universe is expanding.

He was in Anchorage to speak and participate in the American Astronomical Society that held its 220th conference in Anchorage in June 2012, hosted locally by UAA’s Department of Physics and Astronomy,
