'X-tended Reality: Sensors, Spatial Temporal Analytics, Behavior Modeling, and Game Platforms' with Dr. George Kamberov

Extended reality and large scale data analytics provide a unique opportunity to exploit the data provided by social media, sensor networks, and predictive and forensic analysis. We will discuss cyber-physical systems for simulations, training, technology and tactics evaluation, forensics, synthesis of behavior models, semantic mapping, scenario play-through, information organization and visualization, and human-computer collaboration.

Dr. George Kamberov is an Associate Professor in the Computer Science Department at Stevens Institute of Technology. He earned his M.S. in Mathematics at the University of Sofia in Bulgaria and his Ph.D in Mathematics at the University of Pennsylvania. He has published widely in mathematics, computer science, computer vision, pattern recognition, and related fields. Dr. Kamberov also performs research in computer and network security, medical records, compression, and data reduction.

This lecture is presented by UAA Complex Systems and the Office of Research and Graduate Studies.

Dr. Amy L. Lovecraft (Political Science/UAF) edited the book North by 2020 which covers the scholarship of over 90 authors from different academic disciplines. Topics highlighted are the science of modeling change, indigenous contributions to sustainability, freshwater management, Arctic coastal margins, marine living systems and infrastructure, oil and gas development, the arts and planning for the future.

Polaris Lecture: 'The Statesmanship of Abraham Lincoln: A Reappraisal' presented by Forrest Nabors

UAA professor Forrest A. Nabors presents the annual Lincoln Day Polaris Lecure, “The Statesmanship of Abraham Lincoln: A Reappraisal.” The Polaris Lecture Series is sponsored by the Forty-Ninth State Fellows Program, University Honors Society and the Polaris Society.

Few Americans exceed Abraham Lincoln in popular esteem. But how great was he? In commemoration of Lincoln’s birthday, Professor Nabors will explain why Lincoln achieved even more for liberty than is generally understood.

Professor Nabors joined the political science faculty at UAA in Aug. 2011. He taught American government and political philosophy at Oregon State University and at University of Oregon, where he also completed his doctorate in 2011. He currently is writing a book about American political development through post-Civil War Reconstruction.
