The UAA Institute of Social and Economic Research presents, “Regulating Offshore Oil and Gas Activity Around the Arctic,” with special guest Besty Baker of Vermont Law School.

Hear Betsy Baker talk about recent initiatives from around the Arctic regarding offshore oil and gas regulation there. Dr. Baker is an associate professor at the Vermont Law School, as well as senior fellow for Oceans and Energy at the school’s Institute for Energy and the Environment. She discusses implementation of the Arctic offshore oil and gas guidelines developed by the Arctic Council’s Protection of the Arctic Marine Environment (PAME) Working Group; the Canadian National Energy Board’s “Arctic Review,” and “A Circumpolar Inuit Declaration on Resource Development Principles in Inuit Nunaat,” issued by the Inuit Circumpolar Council earlier this year.

James Urban is a landscape architect with more than 30 years experience planting trees in difficult urban areas, like dense downtowns. Urban argues that trees need a new zone to go along with the traditional, like the desert forest or the mountain forest. It should be called the urban forest.

His talk at UAA was co-sponsored by Facilities and Campus Services, the Alaska Division of Forestry Community Forestry Program and the Pacific Northwest Chapter of the International Society of Arborists.

UAA recently earned Tree Campus USA recognition for its dedication to campus forestry management and environmental stewardship by the nonprofit Arbor Day Foundation. This is the second year UAA has been named a Tree Campus USA.
