Doug Birch began his new position as Atwood Chairman by giving a public speech to journalism students and enthusiasts. Birch’s speech discussed his adventures working as a war correspondent for The Sun and the future of journalism.

On September 21, 2006 Sy Liebergot spoke to an interested audience in the Wendy Williamson. During his speech he talked about his role in the famous Apollo 13 disaster and about overcoming adversity when things are looking down. He also discussed how teamwork played a part in resolving the disaster. Here is his entire speech.
On September 18, 2006 Bakari Kitwana spoke in the UAA Den about the relationship between Hip Hop culture and political action. His speech discussed some of the political decisions regarding Hip Hop, the changes in Hip Hop, and the force that the Hip Hop generation could have on politics.
On September 8th 2006, Student Activities presented Salsa Night in the Student Union Cafeteria. It featured El Combo Tropical Latino, a dance lesson, and free food provided by El Tango.
