English professor Toby Widdicombe delivered this lecture on a topic he has studied for 43 years, since the age of 11. He is the author of several books and a past editor of the international Journal on Utopian Studies. In this lecture he looks at the various definitions and misconceptions of utopia. He is introduced by Steve Haycox, professor of history.

On April 16 at UAA, the last of five forums in the series “Warriors for a New Era: Challenging Alaska Native Young People to Repower their World” was held in Room 307 of the UAA/APU Consortium Library. The session was several hours long, and has been broken into several parts for podcasting.

Of the forums, organizer Larry Merculieff has said, “Younger generations need to know that they are important, and that they can get support from older generations to courageously meet the challenges facing them in the modern world.”

In Part 3, three Alaska Native leaders spoke to the group. They were Liz Cheney (Liz Medicine Crow), vice president of the First Alaskans Institute and director of the Alaska Native Policy Center; Harold Napoleon, author of ‘Yuuyaraq: The Way of the Human Being”; and Nelson Angapek, vice president of the Alaska Federation of Natives.

Background on the Warriors for a New Era forum series

The Middle Ages are too often misunderstood, says Dr. Daniel Kline, an associate professor of English at UAA. In this Relevant Research lecture delivered in the Spring of 2010, Kline gave a three-part talk that outlined our traditional understanding of “the Middle Ages,” summarized new research on the Medievil Era, and laid out the implications of “medievalism,” the post-medieval appropriations of that culture by modern culture. Kline concludes that, in many ways, our own historical moment is more “medieval” than we might otherwise imagine.

Professor Kline is introduced by Dr. James Liszka, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.
