UAA celebrates International Polar Year (IPY) with 24-hour theatre

Students, staff and alumni write and perform theatre based on IPY themes

ANCHORAGE, Alaska –
UAA is pleased to present an evening of four short plays based on the themes of the International Polar Year (IPY) on Saturday, October 6 at 8:00 p.m. in UAA’s Fine Arts Building, room 150. Modeled after the Alaska Overnighters, these plays will be written, directed and produced in only 24 hours! Participants in this unique event are current UAA students and staff, as well as UAA alumni. The University of Alaska (UA) is taking an active role in celebrating the 2007-2009 IPY by promoting research, education, arts and outreach activities to ensure that the benefits of IPY extend to everyone in Alaska.

The IPY is a scientific program that focuses on the Arctic and the Antarctic and is organized through the International Council for Science and the World Meteorological Organization. 2007 marks the beginning of the fourth IPY. The first occurred in 1882, followed by 1932 and 1957. For additional information on IPY, visit http://greenandgold.uaa.alaska.edu/ipy/.

Researchers develop water index tool for the Arctic

A new water vulnerability assessment tool created by University of Alaska researchers may help communities monitor and protect their water resources. The tool, the Alaska Water Resource Vulnerability Index, or AWRVI (pronounced R-VEE), is the culmination of a five-year project to collect and house existing data in one database. The tool is the first comprehensive water assessment tool focused on the Arctic. Read More…

UAA study finds climate change could add $6 billion to public infrastructure costs in Alaska by 2030

Roads and other infrastructure built on permafrost hardest hit

Alaska’s warming climate could have a dramatic financial impact on the public infrastructure of the state that could reach billions of dollars according to a report released today by the University of Alaska Anchorage’s (UAA) Institute for Social and Economic Research (ISER).

The report, Estimating Future Costs for Alaska Public Infrastructure at Risk From Climate Change, shows that it will be roughly 10 to 20 percent more expensive to maintain and replace public infrastructure in Alaska between now and 2030, and 10 percent more expensive between now and 2080. The total cost to Alaska could reach well into the billions given the latest regional projections of future climate. (more…)

Reception for IPY postdoctoral research fellows

The public was invited to a free community reception on June 6, at the UA Museum of the North in honor of UA’s 11 International Polar Year (IPY) postdoctoral research fellows. IPY is a two year, multi-national effort to boost scientific research on the Earth’s polar regions.

The reception was hosted by the University of Alaska Board of Regents and UA President Mark Hamilton.

UAA students receive IPY research awards

The Cooperative Institute for Arctic Research announced in November, graduate and undergraduate support awards statewide. UAA students received awards for International Polar Year research through a competitive review process in a wide variety of National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration polar issues in physical, biological and social sciences.

Research will determine how increase in shrubs affects Alaska’s arctic regions

Dr. Jeff Welker of the University of Alaska Anchorage’s (UAA) Environment and Natural Resources Institute (ENRI), recently received a $622,000 grant from the Office of Polar Programs at the National Science Foundation (NSF) for his research project associated with the International Polar Year (IPY) investigations. The proposed project will quantify how increases in shrubs have altered the abiotic environment, causing a fundamental change in the functional attributes of these systems in arctic Alaska.
