July 18, 2011

Participants in science camp watch the testing phase of their The ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Science Camp continues at UAA through July 22. One exercise for campers was to create a swatch of space cloth by selecting and layering a variety of materials, then testing the swatch to see if it withstand piercing by a sharp object. This simulated a walk in space with debris striking the astronaut’s space suit. About 50 middle school students from all around Alaska participated in the program. In the photo, they watch as a swatch encounters the sharp blade in their test phase.
