Based on Doug Vandegraft’s 14 years of research, A Guide to the Notorious Bars of Alaska details the rich history and atmosphere of noteworthy Alaska bars. Several of the bars featured have been around since the end of Prohibition in 1933, and have gained legendary repute in their communities and beyond.

Doug Vandegraft has worked as a cartographer for the Department of the Interior since 1983. He began his notorious bars of Alaska project in 1999, while still living in Anchorage. A Guide to the Notorious Bars of Alaska is published by Epicenter Press. A revised second edition of A Guide to the Notorious Bars of Alaska will soon be released.

At this event, Doug will give a presentation about the latest edition of the guidebook. Included will be a summary of the notorious bars that have closed since the first edition, and the bars that have been added to the second edition.

Everyone is invited to come share laughs and stories. There is free parking at UAA on Saturdays.

‘Financial Management with Cellphones in China’
Tuesday, Sept. 26, 5–7 p.m.
UAA Campus Bookstore

Yuhua Cui and Yuan Tian from the UAA Confucius Institute discuss financial management with cellphones in China, including online banking, the WeChat Purse, online purchases and transportation orders.

Everyone is invited to attend. There is free parking for this event in the South Lot, Sports Complex NW Lot, West Campus Central Lot and Sports Campus West Lot.

Artist Thomas Chung presents ‘Art and Everything Else’
Wednesday, Sept. 27, 5–7 p.m.
UAA Campus Bookstore

Artist Thomas Chung teaches in the Department of Art at UAA. At this event, he discusses art, expression and American life. Born in New Jersey and raised in Hong Kong and New York City, Thomas Chung received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the San Francisco Art Institute and a Master of Fine Arts from Yale University. Chung has participated in numerous group and solo shows throughout the U.S., and his multidisciplinary work has been discussed in Art in America, The New Yorker and Modern Painters Magazine.

Everyone is invited to attend. There is free parking for this event in the South Lot, Sports Complex NW Lot, West Campus Central Lot and Sports Campus West Lot.
