Sarah Garner named director of Student Life and Leadership

August 16, 2017

Please join Student Affairs in welcoming Sarah Garner as UAA’s new director of Student Life and Leadership. Having served in Student Affairs for more than ten years at a variety of institutions, she brings directly relevant leadership experience to this position. Most recently, Sarah served as the director of Student Leadership and Community Engagement at the University of Massachusetts Boston. Prior to that, she worked at the University of Kentucky as program director for Civic Engagement and at Penn State University as the program director for Community Service and Service Learning. She began her career in Student Affairs as an assistant hall director at Michigan State University and then as the coordinator for the Community Relations Coalition.

Sarah earned a Bachelor of Journalism in advertising from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and a Master of Arts in student affairs administration from Michigan State University.

Thank you to the members of the Dean of Students search committee for their excellent work presenting three finalists for the campus community to consider. Committee members were: Paola Banchero, Whitney Brown, Cody Buechner, Kerry Davis, Dawn Dooley (chair) and Tim Flynn.

Thank you to the students who met with the candidates and provided feedback and to Zac Clark for facilitating the student forums.

Thank you also to those of you who attended the open forums, provided written feedback, assisted with travel arrangements and hosted meals.

We look forward to seeing how Sarah will translate her experience and continue her service to students here at UAA. She will begin on Aug. 28—please join us in warmly welcoming her to UAA and Alaska.
