Dear UAA students,
There is painful uncertainty about the University of Alaska’s future funding. There is much work still to be done by the Alaska Legislature and we likely won’t know until summer what our budget will be for the upcoming academic year. We can’t say exactly how a reduced budget will affect the delivery of your classes and programs, or what the impact might be on your co-curricular activities and the services UAA provides to help you through your college experience.
As we make decisions regarding program delivery and service changes, we always will keep you-our students-at the center of our conversations. With an anticipated funding reduction of this magnitude, I can’t promise you won’t feel this cut in some way; however, I can assure you we will do our best to minimize the impact on your ability to reach your educational goals. After all, you are the most important reason UAA is here.
I encourage you to stay informed about the budget discussions taking place in the legislature. You can find a great deal of information on the University of Alaska State Relations’ website. Students are key in helping decision makers understand the impacts of potential cuts to higher education in Alaska. Your voices have been heard loud and clear in Juneau. Thank you for your steadfast support of UAA.
I will continue to share information with you about the funding situation as it becomes available. In the meantime, you can pose your questions and offer ideas here, and you can attend one of several Coffee with the Chancellor sessions to talk with me personally about your concerns.
Keep studying and working hard to achieve your goals. I am proud of the work you are doing and the professional way in which you represent this university.
