Fall 2009: A holiday closure message from Facilities and Campus Services

December 17, 2009

The University of Alaska Anchorage will be closed for the holidays beginning at noon on Wednesday, Dec. 23, until Monday, Jan. 4, 2010. UAA will resume its normal schedule on Monday, Jan. 4, 2010.

UAA Facilities and Campus Services will take advantage of the holiday closure to save on energy and accomplish some critical maintenance and projects that cannot be accomplished while buildings are fully occupied. All UAA buildings will be locked during the closure and the heating and ventilation systems will be set to “unoccupied.” Building temperatures will be kept in the mid-60s and the air exchanges will be minimized. The buildings will be habitable, but cool and possibly stuffy. Most hallway and common area lighting will be normally off with only egress lighting on.

Maintenance staff and contractors will be working in a variety of areas on campus, and will conduct daily building walkthroughs. Snow removal will be minimized during the break period, but main roads will be kept passable for emergency response equipment. Parking lots, streets and sidewalks will be cleared before UAA reopens on Monday, Jan. 4, 2010.

What can you do to save energy and be safe during the holiday closure?
Before you leave, please turn off or unplug all unnecessary electronic equipment, including holiday lights, task lamps, radios, desktop printers, desktop computers, heaters, battery chargers, coffee pots, etc.

  • Cover your electronic equipment and other sensitive property (phone, computer, printer, etc.) with plastic garbage sacks, which are available from Custodial Services, if needed.
  • Make sure electronics are off the floor.
  • If you do come to campus to work during the closure, it’s a good idea to check in with UPD at (907) 786-1120) to let them know that you’re in the building and approximately how long you’ll be there.

If you notice a Facilities problem while you’re on campus, call UPD and they will contact the Facilities staff.

Our best wishes for a safe and happy holiday season!
